It's New Year's Eve for the Hotel Avanti (Set in a five star Tokyo hotel), and the whole place is in panic mode. There's an award ceremony and countdown party to prepare for, guests to greet, entertainment to organise, a persistent call girl to deter, an escapee duck to find, and more. It is near impossible to sum up this film in a few neat concise paragraphs. The level of writing that has gone into this film is fantastic. Throughout, it really feels like a stage play. The viewer feels intimate with the story and characters, and there is a real warmth and closeness there that is rare to find. Perhaps it the writer's experience with the stage that allows that quality to come through, and as such it is a real strength for the film. This intimacy really helps the viewer to involve themselves in the story, which is incredibly fast-paced and deliciously mischievous in design. The film is really funny, and represents a very full spectrum of humour, from "hmmm" funny to "hah hah", and wry to downright silly, but still manages to be quite understated. The jokes of course wouldn't work without the film's biggest strength: the characters (All-star, major Japanese actors & actresses). They are all so enjoyable to watch, as their adventures and mishaps tangle and spiral together, gathering momentum in one huge snowball effect. Some scenes are the culmination of so many threads that it is wonderfully painful to watch it all come together. It is hard not to talk at the TV. To the writer's credit though, the film is often refreshingly unpredictable, and I was impressed to find that this comedy of errors didn't just rely on the same old gags as similarly styled comedies. The film also carries a dramatic message, and while all of the characters are caricatures of sorts, they are much deeper than that, and live and breath to the extent that the viewer finds themselves genuinely caring about what happens to them. There are so many great characters and scenes in this film that it would be a very cynical viewer that couldn't take away something memorable from it.

Watanabe Shogoro/Higashiyama Noriyuki is a lazy constable at the Honmachi Magistrate’s Office and avoids troublesome tasks. But once there is a “job”, he demonstrates cool-headedness in cutting down villains with his sword. Shogoro has always been unable to hold his head high as a son-in-law adopted into his wife's family. One day, he has a rare display of anger and gets into a quarrel with his wife Fuku/Nakagoshi Noriko.

 Fuku leaves home. Coincidentally, a chief priest and wives who have run away from their husbands and sought refuge at the temple are slain. Fearing that Fuku is one of them, Shogoro hurries to the temple. At the same time, a husband and wife pair of assassins Kawaraya no Jinpachiro/Endo Kenichi and Nakibokuro no Omiya/Yamamoto Mizuki arrive in Edo. Shogoro happens to encounter them at the corner of a street. Okiku/Wakui Emi, who knows Jinpachiro and Omiya, warns Shogoro that he must not have anything to do with them. However, Jinpachiro, a carouser and gambler, ends up meeting the picture framer Ryoji/Matsuoka Masahiro at a gambling den in the red light district. Despite the things they share in common, Ryoji cannot hide his disgust at Jinpachiro’s way of life. At that point, a man who seems to be the criminal in the temple massacre is found to have committed suicide. Although Shogoro senses a conspiracy behind the case, the jurisdiction for the temple lies with the magistrate for temples and shrines, and Shogoro’s superior Masumura Rintaro/Namase Katsuhisa is too timid to investigate further. The priest Enten/Takenaka Naoto takes up the position of chief priest with the blessings of the magistrate for temples and shrines Edajima Kaneyoshi/Nakamaru Shinsho shortly after that. Ryu/Chinen Yuri who had originally experienced religious training as the heir of a temple, feels something is wrong with the new state of affairs at the temple which has started accepting females as if nothing has happened. On this day, Oichi/Tanaka Minako brings her daughters Misato/Miyatake Mio and Yui/Miyatake Matsuri to the temple to seek shelter from her husband’s violence. However, behind the scenes at the temple is a conspiracy to take advantage of the vulnerabilities of females and exploit them.

SPECIALIST 4 Special 2015 *Tsuyoshi Kusanagi

The impressive way in which a bomb scare that occurred the city of Kyoto was resolved spreads on the internet. Besides that, an interview with Takakura Kiichiro/Osugi Ren, the commissioner of the Kyoto Prefectural Police, is published in the newspapers and Takuma Yoshito’s/Kusanagi Tsuyoshi ability becomes a topic of conversation. Requests to investigate unsolved cases from pour in from every precinct within the prefecture’s jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Takakura hints at the dissolution of the Special Investigation Unit which was hastily created to allow Takuma to be reinstated and makes other inscrutable moves such as sounding out Anegakoji Chinami/Minami Kaho about a instructor position at the police academy. In the midst of this, Arashiyama City’s unofficial mascot Nishinba is kidnapped and the Special Investigation Unit is asked to investigate. At first, Chinami and the members of Special Investigation Unit (Ashina Sei, Satoi Kenta, Hiraoka Yuta) dismiss it as a mere theft of a cartoon character costume, but Takuma raises the possibility of a kidnapping and they begin to investigate. Then the mascot’s finger is delivered to Chinami’s home. The sender is a crowdfunding site called ‘Hauptmann’. On this occasion, supporters were notified of the time and place that the flash mob would be conducted, but Chinami’s mother-in-law Sae/Enami Kyoko mistakenly invested 120,000 yen! After taking a look at the site, Takuma points out that it is not soliciting funding for events but for crimes. Besides that, he deduces from the presence of a similar site which bears the names of actual vicious criminals “Dillinger”, “Ponzi” and “Young” overseas, that when the funding target is reached, crimes imitating these criminals will occur. Takuma names this “crime funding”. Learning that a kidnapper called Bruno Richard Hauptmann exists in the US and the connection between Nishinba’s kidnapping and funding solicited on the crowdfunding site, Chinami and the rest start to re-investigate the kidnapping case. It is not long before a phone call is made to the mayor of Arashiyama City to demand a ransom of 4,960,000 yen. The kidnapping of Nishinba is the truth. However, Takuma has misgivings about the ransom’s amount and tampers with it. Then a shocking sight is witnessed at the scene of the handover. In addition, they find out that the crowdfunding site which was supposed to be shut down has been restored and concern grows within the Special Investigation Unit that crimes funded by investors will continues. The team is broken up and then a cherished person dies.
